What are the requirements of ISO 14001 Standard?

ISO 14001 Certification offer a set of standard elements that will guide in the implementation of an Environmental Management System . The requirements are designed to be applicable to any kind ad size of the organization. All elements of the standard are mandatory, but the need stipulate the elements of an EMS that required to be covered, and the ISO standard does not define how to address those requirements.

The ISO 14001 Certification requirements are broadly separated into 10 parts (called ISO 14001 clauses), with clauses one through 3- describing the ISO standard and clauses 4- through 10 containing the requirements for an EMS:
Clause 4:- Context of the organization
Clause 5:- Leadership
Clause 6:- Planning
Clause 7:- Support
Clause 8:- Operation
Clause 9:- Performance evaluation
Clause 10 :-Improvement.
Clauses 1 through 3 include no needs, but instead deal with the scope of the standard, normative references to understand the standard better, and terms and definitions used in the standard.

The development of ISO 14001

Before its 1st launch in year 1996 of the ISO 14000 Certification series of standards, organizations already voluntarily had been developing their own Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in order to reduce the negative effects of their business processes on the environment. However, they did not have the necessary tools to compare their environmental related practices and impacts until ISO established ISO 14001 as a common management system for comparison.
1992 – BS 7750 Standard Lunch.
Declaration of Rio-De-Janeiro on Environment system & Development.

1993 – Committee is created to develop ISO 14001 Management system.
The European Commission developed EMAS

1996 – ISO publishes the 1st version of ISO 14001-1996 Certification
2004 – ISO updates the Environmental Management System to ISO 14001:2004 revision
2015 – ISO updated the Environmental Management System (EMS) to ISO 14001:2015 Revision
